16 September 2012 - International Day for the Protection of Ozone

The IO3C has issued its annual press release on the International Day for the Protection of Ozone.

31 August 2012 - Elections of the IO3C

At the meeting of the IO3C held at the Quadrennial Ozone Symposium in Toronto, it was decided to keep the same officers as we had for the last four years. Some members of the Commission completed their terms and new memebrs were elected (see Current Officers and Members under the People tab). the report from that meeting is found here and two of the presentations made at the meeting are also available: from Christos Zerefos (here) and Ulf Koehler (here).

11 July 2012 - Carl Mateer and Dave Hofmann

We lost two more major figures in ozone research, Carl Mateer and Dave Hofmann (This was recently brought to the attention of the editors of this site).

Carl Mateer, former President of the International Ozone Commission from 1980-1984, died in July 2011. Carl was a pioneer in the study of ozone for his analyses of ozonesonde and other measurement datasets.

Dave Hofmann, former director of NOAA ESRL’s Global Monitoring Division, had a wide ranging number of accomplishments for his studies of ozone and aerosols. Dave died on August 11, 2009. See this for a nice description of Dave’s many accomplishments.

15 March 2012 - Requiem to the loss of a great scientist - F. Sherwood Rowland

The death of F. Sherwood Rowland, commonly called Sherry by his friends and colleagues, was a great loss to the international Scientific Community and particularly to the International Ozone Commission, which was proud to have Sherry as one of its Honorary Members. 1 March 2012 - QOS 2012 - Abstract Deadline Extended - Third Circular

The deadline for submission of abstracts has been extended until 25 March 2012. More details are available in the third circular, which provides new details about the upcoming 2012 Quadrenial Ozone Symposium, to be held in Toronto, Canada from Aug 27 to Aug 31 2012.

29 November 2011 - 2012 Dobson Award For Young Scientists

The International Ozone Commission is now accepting nominations for the 2012 Dobson Award For Young Scientists which is granted for one or more outstanding research paper(s) in atmospheric sciences published or accepted in a refereed journal since the last Quadrennial Ozone Symposium (July 2008) by a young scientist (within ten years of Ph.D). For more details, please see the announcement.

22 November 2011 - QOS 2012 - First Circular

The first circular preliminarily announcing the 2012 Quadrenial Ozone Symposium, to be held in Toronto, Canada from Aug 27 to Aug 31 2012, has been released. It is available here.

1 August 2011 - WMO Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award 2012/13

Nominations are being solicited for the 2012/13 WMO Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award. The award is granted for an outstanding research paper in atmospheric sciences, published or accepted during the last two years in a refereed journal by a young scientist (age below 35 years by the date of publication). The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2011. More details are available in the announcement.

4 April 2011 - Ozone Depletion Press Release.

Depletion of the ozone layer - the shield that protects life on Earth from harmful levels of
ultraviolet rays from the Sun - has reached an unprecedented high level over the Arctic this
spring because of the continuing presence of ozone depleting substances in the atmosphere
and a very cold winter in the stratosphere. Please see the press release for details.


2010

12 December 2010 - First announcement of the 2011 NDACC Symposium

The Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change has announced preliminary plans for their 2011 Symposium to be held 7-10 November 2011 in Reunion Island, France. Please see the announcement for details..

16 October 2010 - Bob Watson to be awarded Blue Planet Prize

Bob Watson is to be awarded the Blue Planet Prize, an international environmental award which is said to be Japan's equivalent of the Nobel Prize. Christos Zeferos, president of the IOC, congratulates him on the prize, "which laureates all [his] successful contributions to the Montreal Protocol and the developments in and after Kyoto." 16 September 2009 - International Day for the Proctection of the Ozone Layer Press Release

The United Nations declared the 16th of September as the International Day for the Protection of
the Ozone Layer to commemorate the 16th of September 1987, the date when the Montreal Protocol was
signed. The Protocol controls the production and use of ozone depleting substances. It is an
outstanding example of a successful cooperation between scientists,
governments and industry as well as between developed and developing countries. It also
provides an excellent paradigm to the international community for cooperation on complex
environmental issues of global importance. See the annual press release for further details.

25 February 2009 - In Memory of Julius London

Julius London of Boulder, CO, USA died of natural causes on Wednesday, February 25, 2009. His research on radiation transfer in the earth’s atmosphere has served as a basis for recent studies of global climate change.

2008

17 November 2008 - Letter for establishement of expert team on ozone cross-sections

The finalized version of the Letter of Agreement between IO3C and WMO for the establishment of an ad hoc expert team that will assess ozone absorption cross sections used in atmospheric observations will be sent to the chair of the expert team: Johannes Orphal and the group will be constituted.

4 July 2008 - Quadrennial Ozone Symposium (2008) Held

The Quadrennial Ozone Symposium was held in Tromsoe, Northern Norway from June 29th (Sunday) to July 5th (Saturday), 2008.   For further information see: www.qos2008.no. The minutes of the meeting and the new IO3C members elected are available.

16 September 2008 - International Ozone Day

A press release is available on the event of the 2008 International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. The theme of the day this year is "Montreal Protocol - Global Partnership for Global Benefits".  More than twenty years after the signing of the Montreal protocol, the ozone layer has stabilized but large Antarctic ozone hole continues to occur

26 April 2007 - Update on 20th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol Symposium

At the invitation of UNEP, WMO, EESC, IO3C, the Academy of Athens and the National Observatory of Athens, a core group of speakers who have played an important role in the success of the Montreal Protocol from its very beginning, will gather together in Athens, between 23-26 September 2007, to present state of the art scientific results and discuss the success of the implementation of the Montreal Protocol. The theme of the day this year is "Protect the Ozone Layer: Save Life on Earth".  More than two decades since the appearance of the springtime Antarctic ozone hole, ozone remains depleted.

25 October 2005 _ Anver Ghazi

On the 25th of July our dear colleague Dr. Anver Ghazi died after a painful battle with cancer. We lost a good friend, scientist, and administrator.   Paul J. Crutzen provides this obituary.

2004

28 October 2004 - WMO Antarctic Ozone Bulletin

The WMO has released its 6th Antarctic Ozone Bulletin for 2004 stating that, "The ozone hole continues to be much smaller than the average size the past decade." However, despite it's small size, the "ozone mass deficit" has remained relatively high this year.

15 October 2004 - WMO Antarctic Ozone Bulletin

The WMO has released its 5th Antarctic Ozone Bulletin for 2004 stating that, "The ozone hole has decreased in size by about 25% from its maximum size in mid-September,".... part of its seasonal cycle.

30 September 2004 - WMO Antarctic Ozone Bulletin

The WMO has released its 4th Antarctic Ozone Bulletin for 2004 stating that, "During the past two weeks, all but one of the reporting ground-based Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Antarctic stations have measured ozone values well below the 1964-76 pre-ozone hole norms. "

The WMO has released its 3rd Antarctic Ozone Bulletin for 2004 detailing the current condition of the ozone hole over the antarctic continent.

15 September 2004 - Press Release on the 2004 International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer

A new press release is available on the event of the 2004 International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. According to the release, "On the 20 th anniversary of the discovery of the spring time Antarctic ozone hole, ozone remains depleted in the SH spring and over the high northern latitudes following cold winters."

The WMO has released its 1st Antarctic Ozone Bulletin for 2004.

15 June 2004 - Quadrennial Symposium Successful

The twentieth Quadrennial Symposium on Atmospheric Ozone coincides with the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the springtime Antarctic ozone hole. It also marks two decades of intensified basic research in atmospheric chemistry and physics and in global atmospheric monitoring. The progress in our understanding of the impact of human activities on the chemistry and physics of the global stratosphere since the previous Quadrennial Ozone Symposium was presented among the 690 research papers at the XX Quadrennial Ozone Symposium, held in Kos, Greece, 1-8 June 2004.
